Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with cancer. According to a statement issued by his office on Sunday (19 May), the 82-year-old former president has prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, the BBC reported.
The statement said Biden visited a doctor last week after experiencing urinary problems. Following medical examinations, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Friday.
After news of his diagnosis became public, messages of sympathy came from across the political spectrum. Current President Donald Trump said on social media that he and First Lady Melania Trump were saddened by the news and wished Biden a speedy recovery.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris wrote on X that she and her husband were keeping Biden in their prayers, adding that he has the strength to face the challenge.
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama also shared supportive messages. Obama noted Biden’s longstanding efforts to advance cancer treatment and expressed confidence that he would face the illness with determination and dignity.
Joe Biden served as the oldest president in US history. Due to concerns about his health and age, he withdrew from the 2024 US presidential election.
