Psychologists say that people who frequently engage in criticism or negative talk often carry a form of negative self-confidence within themselves. Repeatedly criticising a colleague to others may reinforce this negative mindset rather than resolve issues.
Dr Mekhla Sarkar, a psychiatrist, said in a podcast that workplace behaviours such as mocking colleagues, criticising them unnecessarily, or speaking behind their backs should be avoided. According to her, such actions place a person in a negative position and create an unfavourable impression among coworkers.
She added that persistent negative criticism and fault-finding can make the workplace environment toxic. This not only affects the overall working atmosphere but can also harm an individual’s professional image.
Dr Sarkar emphasised that comments about others often reach the person concerned eventually, which can lead to misunderstandings and unnecessary conflicts.
Her advice is to maintain clear professional boundaries at work and avoid negative criticism of colleagues. By doing so, one can preserve a positive image, reduce workplace conflict, and gradually build stronger self-confidence.
