The monsoon season brings relief from the heat, but it can be quite challenging when it comes to taking care of sarees. Excess humidity, damp air, and sudden rain can damage fabric, cause unpleasant odours, or even lead to fungal growth. With a little extra care, however, your sarees can remain fresh and beautiful throughout the rainy season.

Keep sarees completely dry before storing them. Even slight moisture can lead to mildew or musty smells. If a saree gets wet in the rain, dry it immediately in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.

Use breathable storage instead of plastic covers during the monsoon, as plastic traps moisture. Cotton or muslin cloth bags allow air circulation and reduce the risk of dampness.

Add moisture absorbers such as silica gel packets, neem leaves, or dried charcoal inside your wardrobe. These help absorb excess moisture and keep insects away.

Air sarees regularly by taking them out once every couple of weeks and letting them breathe for a short time. This prevents odour build-up and keeps the fabric fresh.

Avoid folding sarees in the same way every time. Refolding occasionally prevents permanent creases and reduces fabric stress, especially for silk and delicate materials.

Be careful with ironing. Always ensure the saree is completely dry before ironing, as ironing damp fabric can weaken fibres and cause staining.

Store heavily embroidered sarees separately. Zari, silk, and embellished sarees should be kept apart to prevent colour transfer or damage caused by humidity.

With these simple precautions, your sarees can stay safe, fresh, and ready to wear—even during the damp and unpredictable monsoon season.
