Dr Tasnim Jara, Senior Joint Member Secretary of the NCP, has resigned from the party. She announced her resignation on Saturday evening at around 7 pm through the party’s WhatsApp group.
Later, she stated on her verified Facebook profile that she will contest the election from the Dhaka-9 constituency as an independent candidate.
Tasnim Jara’s husband, Khaled Saifullah, who serves as a Joint Convener of the NCP, is also expected to resign from the party.
Speaking to the media, Tasnim Jara said she was stepping down due to personal reasons.
Her resignation came after the finalisation of the NCP’s electoral understanding with Jamaat-e-Islami, following which she stepped down from her post last Saturday.
In a subsequent Facebook post, she wrote that, considering practical realities, she had decided not to contest the election as a candidate of any specific party or alliance and would instead run as an independent candidate from Dhaka-9.
She has already begun collecting signatures from one per cent of voters in the Dhaka-9 constituency—which includes Khilgaon, Sabujbagh and Mugda police stations, along with the Manda area—as part of the requirements to contest independently.
